The official order for the start of the construction of the Berlin wall was issued on 13 August, 1961. The roughly 43 kilometer barrier included watch towers, check-points, barbed wire and mines, creating a border strip separating the Western Allies' enclave of West Berlin, from the rest of the city. The wall fell on 09 November, 1989. EPA-EFE/OMER MESSINGER ATTENTION: This Image is part of a PHOTO SET
